Are You Free—or Just Enslaved Differently?

“Freedom” is one of the most celebrated words in American life, but it can also be one of the easiest words to weaponize. We open 2 Peter 2:17-22 and take Peter’s warning seriously: some voices promise liberty while they themselves remain enslaved, and the people who follow them can end up more trapped than before. That’s why this message presses past slogans and asks a harder question: what kind of freedom actually holds up when temptation, suffering, and time test it?

We walk through Peter’s vivid portraits of false teachers: wells without water, clouds driven by a storm, and a path that leads into deep darkness while claiming to offer light. We also talk about why the pitch works, including “great swelling words” that sound impressive but carry no truth, and tactics that feel like spiritual manipulation. Along the way, we highlight practical discernment for Christians who want to evaluate teaching by substance, not style, and we talk about why repentance and real gospel change cannot be replaced with flattery and easy answers.

We also slow down on the people most at risk: new believers who have recently escaped old patterns and need discipleship, protection, and grounding in God’s Word. Finally, we contrast the counterfeit with the real thing: biblical freedom in Jesus Christ is not “do your own thing” independence, but becoming who God made you to be as you walk in His will and grow into maturity.

We're in 2 Peter chapter 2, and we're going to be examining verse 17 down through verse 22. And the Apostle Peter is continuing to deal with these false teachers, these apostates, how to discern them, how to be alert to them, what to do about

When People Leave Church For “Freedom”

You know, it's a frightening fact, at least it's to me, and as a pastor it seems, it's a frightening fact that many people who are now zealous members of cults were at one time attending churches that at least professed to believe the Christian gospel. They participated in the communion service. They saw the death of the Lord Jesus portrayed in the bread and in the cup. They might have even recited the Apostles' Creed or the Lord's Prayer. Yet today, those people will tell you that they feel free now, that they have been liberated from the Christian faith and now have the truth. At the same time, you'll meet people who have rejected all religious faith and now profess to enjoy a new freedom. Every once in a while you'll run into somebody who will say, I used to believe all that stuff, but I don't believe it anymore. I've got something much better, and I feel free for the first time in my life. Freedom is a concept that is very important in today's world. We talk about it in this country all the time, yet not everybody really understands what the word means. In fact, everybody from the communist to the atheist and everywhere in between seems to have his or her own definition about what freedom is. Nobody is completely free in the sense of having the ability and the opportunity to do whatever you want to do. For that matter, doing whatever you please is not freedom. In fact, it's the worst kind of bondage. Just to do whatever you impulsively feel free to do, want to do. The false teachers that the Apostle Peter is writing about here, these apostates, they offer freedom to their converts. And this bait, if you will, entices them to abandon the true faith and follow the false teachers. The false teachers that Peter's writing about that's in the fellowship, that's in the church, they promise them liberty, but that promise is never fulfilled. The unstable converts, as Peter called them, only find themselves in terrible bondage in truth. The freedom offered is a false freedom. And that's what we're going to talk

Reading 2 Peter 2:17-22

about. Let's read, beginning in verse 17. These are these, meaning these false teachers, these apostates, these are wells without water, clouds carried by a tempest, for whom is reserved the blackness of darkness forever. For when they speak great swelling words of emptiness, they allure through the lust of the flesh, through lewdness, the ones who have actually escaped from those who live in error. While they promise them liberty, they themselves are slaves of corruption. For by whom a person is overcome, by him also he is brought into bondage or slavery. For if, after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overcome, the latter end is worse for them than the beginning. For it would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness than having known it to turn from the holy commandment delivered to them. But it has happened to them according to the true proverb. A dog returns to his own vomit, and a sow, having washed, to her wallowing in the mire. And we shouldn't be deceived by it. We shouldn't be confused by it.

Why The Liberty Is False

Why is this freedom, this offered liberty by these false teachers' thoughts? Well, first of all, in verses 17 and 18, we see clearly that it's based, the reason it's false is it's based on false promises. Based on false promises. Faith is only as good as its object. It seems like in American evangelical churchianity today, you know, as I said churchianity, it seems like we have faith in faith. That's what's kind of promoted. Have faith in faith, just believe. And that's good enough. That's not true. Faith is only as good as its object. A pagan may have great faith in his idol, but the idol can do nothing for him or her. But when you put genuinely put your faith in Jesus Christ, that faith will accomplish something. Why? Because God always keeps his promises. That's why. Not based on your faith, but because God always keeps his promises. The Bible says in 1 Kings 8:56, there has not failed one word of all of his good promise. Not failed one word. And so what happens here when we see this fact that it's based on false promises, this false freedom based on false promises, the Apostle Peter gives us three illustrations here in these verses, verses 17 through 18, that really emphasizes the emptiness of these false teachers' promises that you

Wells Without Water Promises

hear. The first illustration that he gives us is he talks about wells without water. Verse 17. Wells without water. The Greek word actually means a flowing spring rather than a tranquil well. Don't confuse the imagery in your mind. It's the word that our Lord used when he ministered to the woman at the well, the Samaritan woman, when he said, You will have within you a well springing up to life eternal. The Apostle John used that describing the satisfaction of the saints in eternity future that they're going to experience for all eternity in Revelation chapter 7 and in Revelation 21. See, a spring without water is no spring at all. A well is still called a well, even if the water is gone. Maybe a dry well, but still well. But a spring ceases to exist if the water is not flowing. The fact is, there is in mankind an inborn thirst for reality, an inborn thirst for God. Augustine said, Thou hast made us for thyself, and our hearts are restless until they rest in thee. People attempt to satisfy that thirst in many ways. You may have done that yourself in days gone by. You may be in this room doing that now. You may have known somebody that's doing that. People attempt to satisfy that thirst in many ways, but they end up living on substitutes. And only Jesus Christ can give inner peace and satisfaction. He himself said, Jesus said, Whoever drinks, that's present tense, keeps on drinking. Whoever drinks of this water in the well, meaning water, shall thirst again. But then he, speaking of himself, he said, Whoever drinks, takes this one drink once for all of the water that I give you, will never thirst again. What a contrast between the two. You and I may repeatedly drink at the broken cisterns of this world, and we're never going to find satisfaction. But you may very well take one drink of the living water through faith in Jesus Christ, and you're going to be satisfied forever. In him. Only in him. Now, see, the false teachers that Peter's writing about here and warning the church about, they could not make this kind of offer. Why? Because they had nothing to offer. Not really. They could promise, but they couldn't produce. And so, well, without water.

Clouds That Bring No Rain

The next illustration he gives is he says there, verse 17, clouds carried by a tempest. Clouds carried by a tempest. The picture is that of uh, of course, it happens sometimes down here along the rivers and the intercoastal and that kind of thing, but I grew up in a place every morning seeing fog in the mountains up there. All the time it was foggy, and sooner or later the sun would come out and burn it off and it'd be gone. This is the picture of that kind of thing. Fog, clouds, mist that's just kind of being driven along by the humidity. See, clouds really ought to announce the possibility of rain. But these clouds that Peter's writing about only announce that a windstorm is coming. That's what he says. Clouds carried by a tempest, by a windstorm. The Bible says something to the tune of if you reap to the if you sow to the wind, you're gonna reap the whirlwind. A windstorm. Jude's description in Jude 12, he says they are clouds without water carried about of winds. Again, there's noise, there's motion, there's something to watch, but that's about all that there is. There's nothing really profitable that happens. The farmer sees the clouds and prays that they're going to empty rain on his parched fields, but the false teachers have nothing to give. They're empty. See, false freedom is based on false

Darkness Disguised As Light

promises. The third illustration he gives is mists of darkness, the blackness of darkness. Verse 17. Gloom. That's a word that is not enjoyable. Gloom. That's what we're seeing here. The blackness of darkness. That's a very accurate translation. These false teachers. False teachers promise to lead people into the light. But in fact, they themselves end up in the darkest part of darkness. That's what he says here. The atmosphere of hell is not uniform. Other places will be darker than others. Punishment is different. And how tragic it is that innocent people, ignorant, unlearned people, are going to be led astray by these false teachers and by these apostates and possibly end up in hell with them. That's the seriousness of it.

How Empty Words Attract Followers

And since these false teachers really have nothing to give, I mean, you have to ask yourself, well, what is it that makes them so able to attract followers? If they really have nothing to give, how do they get a crowd? Well, the reasons are found in 2 Peter chapter 2, verse 18. It says, For when they speak great swelling words of emptiness, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through lewdness, and the ones who have actually escaped from those who live in error. These teachers, they are eloquent promoters of their doctrines. They're very effective. Good communicators. They know how to impress people with their vocabulary when, in fact, they have inflated words that say nothing. That's what this says. The sad thing I've come to realize, and this includes church people, not just folks out there in the world on the street. This includes church people. The average person does not know how to listen to and how to analyze the kind of propaganda that pours out of the mouths and the printing presses of these false teachers. They don't know how to do it. Many people, sadly, even in our churches, do not know how to tell the difference between a religious hunster and the true servant of Jesus Christ. Need to educate yourself.

Eloquence Versus Manipulation

Need to know God's word. Need to know the truth. Don't be impressed with religious oratory. Apollos was a very fervent and eloquent religious speaker, but he didn't have the right message to preach. The Apostle Paul was careful not to build his convert's faith on either his words or his wisdom. He said that very clearly. Paul was a brilliant man, there's no doubt about that. But his ministry was simple. His ministry was practical. He preached to express, not to impress. He knew the difference between communication and manipulation. Knew the difference. Listen, if you ever feel like you're being manipulated, warning lights ought to go off all over. If you ever feel that, you need to be careful. The second reason these apostates are so successful is he says it very clearly here in the Word of God.

Baiting The Flesh And The Ego

They appeal to the base appetites of the old nature. That's part of their bait. He says, through the lusts of the flesh. Now we oftentimes when we see that term, we only think along the lines of sexual sins. But don't think just that, because the flesh has many other appetites than just sexual sin. I encourage you sometime, I don't have time this morning to teach it, but write this down, Galatians chapter 5, verses 19 through 21. You will get an extensive list given in Galatians 5, verses 19 through 21, and you're going to see many of the different kinds of bait that false teachers have available for baiting their traps. For example, pride is one of the sins of the flesh. Pride. And false teachers love to appeal to the human ego. It's one of their best techniques. Let me tell you what a true servant of God will do. A true servant of God will lovingly tell people, lovingly tell people that they're lost sinners under the wrath of a holy God. The false teacher will try to avoid, and I quote, putting people on a guilt trip, unquote. They'll try to avoid that. And instead, he or she will tell his or her listeners how good they are, how much God loves them, and even how much God needs them. And he will, and really just how easy it is. It's so easy to get into the family of God, is what you'll hear from a false teacher. And maybe tacked on at the end somewhere. It'll be pray this prayer. And that's it. How easy it is to get into the family of God. And in fact, a false teacher may even go so far as to tell them that they're already in God's family. They just need to start living like it. Got to start appropriating that, living like it. And what happens is the false teacher avoids using words like repentance, avoids talking about repentance. Why? Why? Because egotistical men and women do not want to repent. I mean, let's just be honest. We don't.

Protecting New Believers Through Discipleship

Well, the third reason they're so successful is that they appeal to immature people as well. That's what it says at the end of verse 18. People who have, he says, very recently escaped from their old ways. See, the false teacher really has no message for the down and out sinner. For lack of a better way to say it. I probably could have said that a more eloquent way, but that's not my specialty necessarily. But he does have a message for the new believer, oftentimes. That's why it's so important that evangelists and pastors and workers in the church, other Christian leaders, work to ground new converts in the faith, to disciple them. Because, like newborn babies, new profess new professing Christians need to be protected and they need to be fed and they need to be established before they can just be turned loose in this dangerous world. It is a dangerous world. One of the reasons that Peter wrote this letter was to warn the church to care for the new Christians. Why? Because false teachers are out to get them. That's why. And we can't blame new believers for being unstable if we have not taught them how to stand in our churches and in our classes, in our Bible fellowship groups. See, the freedom that false teachers offer is a false freedom. Why? Because it's based on false promises. False promises. But there's a second reason why it's false.

Freedom Offered By Slaves

Verses 19 through 20. It's false because it's offered by false Christians. It's false because it's offered by false Christians. You listen, you can't get someone free if you're in bondage yourself. Can't be done. And false teachers are in bondage. The Apostle Peter here made it clear that these men had temporarily disentangled themselves from the pollutions of the world, it appeared, it seems, but then they went right back into bondage again. They professed to be saved, but they had never really been set free at all, had never been redeemed at all. See, the tenses of the verbs, this is important, a little bit of word study here. The tenses of the verbs in 2 Peter chapter 2, verse 19, are present tense. Present tense. While they promise them, new believers, liberty, they themselves, the apostates, the false teachers, are the servants, are, present tense, are the slaves of corruption. In other words, they claim to be servants of God, but they're only servants of corruption. They're only slaves of sin. I mean, it's bad enough to be a slave, but when sin is your master, you're in the worst possible condition that a person can experience. And that's their situation. Now, if you will take the time at some point, and as you review what Peter has written so far, you can see the kinds of sins that enslave false teachers. Quickly remind you, for one, they were in bondage to money. Their covetousness forced them to use every kind of deceptive technique to exploit innocent people. They were also in bondage to fleshly lust. It said in the in the text they had their eyes on weak women, is what Peter said, whom they could seduce. And in view of what Peter and Jude both wrote about Sodom and Gomorrah, perhaps we should also include weak men and boys in this. They're enslaved by pride, verses 10 and 12 of the same chapter. They thought nothing of speaking evil of those in places of authority, including the angels and including God. They promoted themselves, they derided everybody else, and sad to say, there are people who admire this kind of arrogance, that really are attracted to that. And so they support these proud men and women and support

Noah Lot Balaam And Sin’s Deceit

them. And it's interesting that to compare the three men that Peter has named in this chapter, which was Noah, Lot, and Balaam. Noah had kept himself separated from the apostasy of the world in his day. He boldly preached God's righteousness and was faithful in his walk in witness, even though no one but his family followed the Lord. Lot knew the truth, and by God's grace, God's grace had kept him pure, but he did not keep himself separated, and as a result, he lost his family. As a result, Lot, the Bible tells us that his his soul was tormented. He really did hate the wickedness of Sodom, yet he lived right in the midst of it, and in doing so, he exposed his daughters and his wife to all of these influences. And lost his family. Balaam not only followed the ways of sin, but he actually encouraged other people to do it. He told Balak how to seduce the nation of Israel, and his plan almost succeeded. Lot lost his family, but Balaam lost his life. Ultimately. The Bible says in Hebrews chapter 3, verse 13, beware of the deceitfulness of sin. Because here's the thing Sin always promises freedom, but in the end it brings bondage. Always. It promises life, but instead it brings death. Sin has a way. Of gradually binding a person until there is absolutely no way to escape apart from the gracious divine intervention of the Lord. Even the bondage that sin creates is deceitful because the people who are bound actually think they're free. They think they're free. And too late, usually too late, they discover that they're prisoners of their own appetites, their own habits. Jesus Christ came to bring freedom. He came to bring freedom. In his very first sermon in the synagogue at Nazareth, our Lord sounded forth the trumpet call of freedom, and he also sounded forth the advent,

Christ’s Definition Of True Freedom

as he called it, the year of Jubilee, in Luke chapter 4, verse 16. Christ's meaning of freedom is different from the false teachers, as his message is just as different as his method in accomplishing it. Because in the Bible, in the Bible, freedom does not mean doing your own thing or having it your own way, or as Frank Sinatra and Elvis both saying, I did it my way. Some of you are old enough to remember that. Some of you are like, who's Frank Sinatra? Some of you younger people. You might have heard of Elvis. That attitude is the very essence of sin. I'm going to do it my way. We all struggle against that. Save people. I mean, we struggle against that all the time, every day. Little things, small things, big things. I want to do it my way. And the freedom that Jesus Christ offers means enjoying fulfillment in the will of God. That's the freedom. It means achieving your greatest potential to the glory of God. The Quaker leader, Rufus, you're like, oh man, the pastor's gone to quoting Quakers now. It's a good one. He paraphrased Aristotle and he said, The true nature of a thing is the highest that it can become. Jesus Christ frees us in his grace and his salvation to become our very best in this life according to his glory, and then to be like him in the next completely. That's what he does.
