What If The Freedom They Promise Is a Cage?

They promise “freedom,” but what if the offer is really a cage? We dig into 2 Peter chapter 2 and the uncomfortable gap between religious-sounding words and a life that actually submits to the truth of God. From the start, we track how false teachers and apostates use bait that feels modern and compassionate, liberty, fulfillment, happiness, “find your true self” language, while quietly twisting the grace of God into permission to sin.

We also talk about who gets hit first: unstable souls. Spiritual instability and double-minded living make us easy targets for subtle deception inside the church. Peter’s diagnosis goes deeper than bad ideas. He exposes a heart trained in covetousness, greed that never says “enough,” and the kind of exploitation that treats people as a means to personal gain. Along the way we connect Jesus’ warnings about covetousness with a memorable picture of how craving traps the heart.

Then we turn to Peter’s Old Testament example, Balaam (Numbers 22–25), a man with real gifting who still chose the wrong way for money and honor. It’s a sobering case study in how someone can speak eloquently, know God’s will, and yet rebel anyway, and why Scripture calls that kind of rebellion madness. We close with a clear call to grow up in the faith: get in the Word, learn discernment, rely on the Holy Spirit, and protect your family from being led down a dead end.

Sounding Spiritual Versus Submitting

There's a tremendous difference between merely sounding spiritual and actually submitting to the truth of God. In 2 Peter chapter 2, Peter warns us that character, conduct, and doctrine eventually reveal what words may try to conceal. What kind of bait do the apostates use to catch people? Well, for one thing, they offer them liberty. Look at verse 19. While they promise them liberty, what is that talking about? That's talking about really a perversion of the grace of God. Here's the idea. Well, since you are saved by grace, then you have freedom to sin. Because after all, the more you sin, the more of God's grace you'll experience. That's the line of thinking. Of course, the Apostle Paul answered that very well in Romans 6. Read that sometime, you'll see. And along with freedom,

The Bait Of Liberty And Fulfillment

they also bait the trap with fulfillment. Boy, that's one of the buzzwords of our generation. Fulfillment. I want to be fulfilled. We all struggle with that. We want fulfillment. The idea is you just do it your way, whatever that means, at any cost. The culture today, and this is sad, it really is heartbreaking to me that we are viewed, and sometimes accurately so, as mean-spirited and hateful and uncompassionate. But what that translates is the culture hears that the church speak about Christian life, and that means it's irrelevant, it's outdated, it's old-fashioned, it's restrictive. And so what the culture says to our generations coming up is we have a new lifestyle that makes you fulfilled, and you'll be able to find your true self. Because after all, doesn't God want you to be happy? Right? He wants you to be happy. And then sadly, like the prodigal son, these unstable souls try to find themselves, but they end up losing themselves. We have a generation that's losing themselves. There can be no real freedom and no real fulfillment apart from submission to Jesus Christ.

Unstable Souls And Double-Minded Living

that right. So who are these people who take the bait that the apostates put out in their subtle traps? Peter calls them unstable souls. Stability. Stability is an important factor in a successful Christian life. Stability. And James says that a double-minded man is unstable in all of his ways. A double-minded person. It's dangerous to be double-minded. And just as a child has to learn to walk or run, a Christian has to learn how to stand firm in the Lord. We have to. And so we have to, we we must, if we're going to stay out of the trap of these folks, we need to be aware. We need to avoid their reveling and participating in that. That's not all. Verse 14 through 16. We must abandon their revolting. We must abandon their revolting. What do they do? They revile, they revel, and they revolt. That's what's characteristic. And they do it subtly. It'd be so much easier if these guys were overt. But don't forget, they're in the church. That's the context. They're in the fellowship. They revile and they revel and they revolt. The Bible says, verse 15, they've forsaken the right way. They've abandoned the right road. See, the problem here is the false teachers, the apostates know the right road. They know the straight path that God has established, but they deliberately abandon God's way for their own. There's no wonder here that the Apostle Peter called them natural brute beasts. And he compared them to animals. You know, the psalmist said 32, verse 9 says, Do not be as the horse or as the mule. You ever heard the expression, you're as stubborn as a mule? Yeah. Well, what happens?

Greed, Exploitation, And Cursed Children

Horses like to rush ahead, and the mule likes to lag behind. And both can get you off the right path. The analogy that you see over and over throughout scripture about believers is believers are sheep. Believers are sheep, and sheep need to stay close to the shepherd. Or what will we do? We'll stray. A heart prone to wander to leave the God I love. We've already learned one lesson, one reason for these apostates' godless conducts. They want to satisfy the cravings of their flesh, but there's a second reason. Did you see it? Verse 14. They have a heart trained in covetous practices. It says in the New American Standard, having a heart trained in greed. A heart trained in. Here's the second reason. They're covetousness and they're covetous and they want to exploit people for personal gain. Exploit people for personal gain. He mentioned this already back up in verse 3. Now he's developing this thought. So not only is it that the false teacher's outlook is controlled by his passions, his heart's controlled by his covetousness. He's in bondage to lust or pleasure and money. In fact, what the Bible says here, he's perfected, perfected the skill of getting what he wants. They're experts in greed, NIV says. Phillips' translation is even more graphic. It says their technique of getting what they want through long practice is highly developed. What's that saying? That's saying these guys, they know exactly how to motivate people to give. Know exactly how to do that. And while the true servant of God, true Christian, trusts the Father to meet his or her needs, and seeks to help people through their own giving, the apostate, the false teacher, trusts his fundraising skills, his ability to run a successful capital campaign. And what happens is you end up leaving people in worse shape than when you found them. He knows how to exploit the unstable, the innocent. Now listen, don't take me wrong. Please don't read into something. There's certainly nothing wrong with the ministry sharing its opportunities and sharing its needs with praying friends. But as Peter wrote about the devious practices of these children, look what he look what the only thing he could exclaim at the end of verse 14. This is the only thing he could say. They're accursed children. That's what they are. They're accursed children. They were not the blessed children of God, but they were the cursed children of the devil. They might succeed in the end in building up their bank accounts or they're building an empire of their own, having a bestseller on the New York Times, lots of CDs and videos. They may be successful in building up those things, but in the end, at the throne of God, they're going to be declared bankrupt because Jesus is going to say, Depart from me, you cursed into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels. He said in Mark chapter 16, verse 26, What does it profit a man if he gained the whole world and yet lose his soul? Covetous. Covetousness is the insatiable desire for more. More money. What's wrong with more money? Don't you want more money? The problem is that insatiable desire. More power. See, the issue is this the covetous heart is never content. The covetous heart is never satisfied. You never reach a point where you say, I have enough. Enough is enough. I think that kind of explains in First Timothy chapter 6, verse 10, that sort of explains why the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. Because what happens? What happens is when a person craves more money, you'll commit any sin to satisfy that craving. Root of all kinds of evil. Already broken the first two of the Ten Commandments, because money's already his God and his idol. And boy, I tell you what, when money's already your God and your idol, it's a simple step to break the others. To steal, to lie, take God's name in vain. On and on. No wonder Jesus warned in Luke chapter 12, verse 15, take heed

The Monkey Trap Of Covetousness

and beware of covetousness. No wonder he said that. It's interesting, the the people in North Africa have developed a very clever way to catch monkeys. Don't you want to know how to catch a monkey? This is how you do it. They make a hole in a gourd just large enough for the monkey's paw, and then they fill it, the gourd with nuts, and they tie it to a tree. And at night, what happens is the monkey reaches into the gourd for the nuts. Of course, obviously he cannot pull his paw out of the gourd. Why? Well, of course, all he'd have to do is let go of the nuts, and he could easily escape. But here's the problem: he doesn't want to forfeit his nuts. He doesn't want to give them up. He ends up being captured because of his covetousness. Now, we might expect that kind of stupidity in an animal, but certainly not in a person made in the image of God. Right? Yet it happens every single day, all the time in our lives.

Well, I'll tell you what, Peter, he sure knew his Old Testament scriptures. He's an Old Testament expert. He's already used Noah and Lot to illustrate his words, and now he uses the prophet Balaam. And in the interest of biblical literacy, if you have no idea who Balaam is, I don't have time this morning to read the stories of Balaam in Numbers 22 through 25. Write that down, Numbers 22 through 25. Read it. I'm going to give you a summary. He uses the prophet Balaam. Balaam is a mysterious character, by the way. He's a Gentile prophet who tried to curse the Jews. Balak, who was the king of the Moabites, enemy of Israel, he was afraid of Israel. And so he turned to Balaam for help. Now Balaam knew that it was absolutely wrong to cooperate with Balak. But here's the problem: his heart was covetous, and he wanted the money, and he wanted the honor that Balak promised him. Now Balaam knew the truth of God and he knew the will of God, and yet he deliberately abandoned the right way and he went astray. He is a perfect illustration of the apostates in their covetous practices. That's why Peter uses him as an example. And from the outset, God had told Balaam not to help Balak. And at first Balaam obeyed. He sent the messengers home. But when Balak sent more princes and promised more money and he promised more honor, guess what? Balaam decided, I mean, I might need to pray about this again. Circumstances are continuing to change. I better pray about this. And reconsider the matter. And the second time God tested Balaam and he permitted him to go with the princes. Now that was not God's direct decree, but it was in his permission that he designed to let the prophet do what he would do. And what happened? Balaam jumped at the chance. I mean, he jumped at it. But when he started to go astray, it's interesting. You just need to read that story and of itself. It's a hoot. God rebuked the disobedient prophet through the mouth of his donkey. Read that sometime, it's a blast. I mean, how remarkable it is that the animals obey God even when their masters don't. That's what happened. And God permitted Balaam to set up his altars and to offer his sacrifices. But God did not permit him to curse Israel. Instead, God turned Balaam's curse into a blessing. And Balaam was not able to curse Israel, but he was able to tell Balak how to defeat Israel. And all the Moabites had to do was to invite the Jews to be friendly neighbors and to share in their feasts. And instead of maintaining its separated position, Israel compromised and joined the pagan orgies of the Moabites. And what happened was God had to discipline the people, and thousands of them died. Thousands of them died. And yet we can see, you can see in Balaam that Peter uses. You can see in Balaam the two aspects of apostasy that Peter emphasizes in this chapter: sensual lust and covetousness. He loved money and he led Israel into lustful sin. And here's the thing: he was a man who could get messages from God, and yet he led people away from God. Led them away. When you read his oracles, you can't help but be impressed with his eloquence. And yet he deliberately disobeyed God. Balaam reached a point, he said, I've sinned, but his confession was not sincere. He even prayed at one point, Let me die the death of the righteous. Yet he didn't want to live the life of the righteous. And because Balaam counseled Balak to seduce Israel, God saw to it that Balaam was judged. He was slain by the sword when Israel ultimately defeated the Midianites. I wonder who got all that wealth that he had earned by his devious ways when he was dead. Peter called his hire the wages of unrighteousness at the end of verse 15. That reminds us of another pretender, Judas, who received the reward of iniquity but also perished in shame. We can't ignore the main lesson. If there's one thing you're going to take away, and I'll have said a lot of stuff from this text, but if there's one thing you're going to take away, here's the main lesson. He was a rebel against the will of God. That's the main lesson. He was a rebel against the will of God. And like the false teachers that Peter described, Balaam knew the right way, but deliberately chose the wrong way because he wanted to make money. That's the deal. He no doubt had a true gift from God. Because he uttered some beautiful. Even this guy, he uttered some beautiful prophecies about Jesus Christ. Read the story. Numbers 22 through 25. But he prostituted that gift to base uses. Just in order to gain honor and wealth. A bank officer one time approached a junior clerk and secretly asked him, If I give you $50,000, would you help me alter the books? Yes, I guess I would. He says, Well, would you do it for a hundred dollars? Well, of course not. What do you think I am? A common thief? He said, You've already determined that. All we're talking about now is the price. The person who is covetous does have his or her price. When it's met, when that price is met, he or she will do whatever is asked, even if it is revolt against the will of God. The Apostle Peter calls this attitude, verse 16, madness. He restrained the madness of the prophet. That word means to be deranged, it means to be out of your mind. See, what Balaam thought was he was doing the wise thing. After all, he's just taking advantage of the situation that might never come along again, right? Opportunity only knocks once. And here,

Why Rebellion Against God Is Madness

any rebellion against God is madness and can only ultimately lead to tragedy. And that's where we are. Well, Peter has condemned these three sins of these false teachers. They're reviling, they're reveling, and they're revolting. All these sins spring from pride and selfish desire. And a true Christian, a true servant of God, desires to be humble, desires to seek to serve others. The true servant of God doesn't think about praise, doesn't think about a pat on the back, doesn't think have your about having your name written down somewhere, doesn't think about pay. Because he serves God from a loving and obedient heart. Yes, it's absolutely right and biblical. Workers worthy as hire, it says in the scriptures. Those who preach the gospel ought to make their living from the gospel, according to the scriptures.

Pleading for support. And they're gifted, and they're experienced when it comes to deceiving people and getting their money. And it is important that God's people be established in the truth so that they know how to detect when the scriptures are being twisted and people are being exploited. You need to know that.

Now, not all religious frauds are going to be discovered and put out of business. But one day God's going to deal with them all. And like these animals, he says they're going to be taken and destroyed. They're going to receive the reward of unrighteousness to compensate for the wages they have exploited from others, and as cursed children, as he calls them, they're going to be banished from the presence of the Lord forever. They are marked, men and women, and they will not escape. Church, pay attention. Be smart. Be spiritually discerning to truth. Know God's word. So that you can teach others. So that you can protect your family. So that you won't be led down a dead end. The way that happens, first and foremost, is that the Holy Spirit resides in you. And the way the Holy Spirit resides in you is through faith and repentance in Jesus Christ. Regeneration. He sets up his indwelling. And he lives there. Now the problem with that is we can grieve him and we can quench him, according to what the scriptures teach. But if you'll yield to him, you'll allow him to control you, be filled with the Spirit, you will have the illumination of God, He will teach you. Jesus said, Howbeit when He the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you in all truth, and He will not speak of Himself, but that what He hears from the Father, that shall He speak, and He will show you things to come. The Holy Spirit. Falling into the trap of false teachers. As long as I'm here, they'll never stand in this pulpit. But they may have conversations. They may sit in Bible fellowship classes. They may end up being a teacher and I don't
