What Just Happened To Me?

Something happened, and you can’t quite explain it. Maybe you prayed for the first time with real honesty, or you finally trusted Jesus Christ after months or years of resisting, and now you’re sitting with one big question: what just happened to me?

We walk through a single anchor verse, 2 Corinthians 5:17, and slow it down until it makes sense. I explain three realities that Scripture says are true for anyone who is in Christ: you were born again, your sin was forgiven completely, and you are a new creation. That means your relationship to God changes permanently. You’re not on spiritual probation, hoping you can behave your way into acceptance. You receive a new status as God’s child, and the shame you keep replaying is no longer telling you the truth because the debt was nailed to the cross.

Then we deal with the part that often confuses and discourages new believers: if everything is new, why do old habits still pull so hard? We talk about sanctification as the lifelong process of learning to live like who you already are, and why the tension you feel can be a sign of real spiritual life, not proof that nothing changed. We also extend a clear invitation for anyone still on the fence to turn from sin and trust in Jesus alone.

I'm Dr. Timothy Mann, and this is Starting Point, a special feature of Foundations of Truth designed specifically for people who are new to the Christian faith or who are just beginning to explore what it means to follow Jesus Christ. This is not a place where you have to pretend to have it all figured out. I know I don't. This is not a place where you will be judged for your questions or your doubts or your past. This is a starting point. And every journey, no matter how far it eventually goes, begins with a first step.

So let me ask you something to open today's episode. Maybe you were listening because something happened to you recently that you are still trying to understand. Maybe you were at a church service, or you were listening to a message online, like Foundations of Truth. Or you were having a conversation with a friend and something shifted. Something changed. You prayed a prayer you had never prayed before. You made a decision you've been putting off for a long time. And now, a few hours or a few days later, you find yourself wondering what just happened to me? Well that is exactly the question I want to answer today. Because what happened to you? If you genuinely turn from your sin and put your trust in Jesus Christ, that is the most significant thing that has ever happened to you. More significant than the day you were born, more significant than any achievement or relationship or experience in your life. And you deserve to understand it. You need to understand

it. Our anchor text today is in the New Testament, 2 Corinthians chapter 5, verse 17. Maybe you have a copy of the Bible. You can go to the New Testament and find 2 Corinthians 5, verse 17, or if you have a Bible app, you can open your Bible app and simply find 2 Corinthians chapter 5 and click on it, and you'll find verse 17. The Apostle Paul is writing there, and he writes under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, and he says, Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. Old things have passed away. Behold, all things have become new. A new creation. Old things passed away. All things new, that is what happened to you. And today, I want to walk with you through three truths that verse is telling us. Three truths, three realities that will help you begin to understand the extraordinary change that is taking place in your life.

New Birth Not Self Improvement

The first thing that I want you to understand is that what happened to you was not simply a decision. It was not a lifestyle change. It was not turning over a new leaf or committing to be a better person. What happened to you was a birth. You were born again. Now I know that phrase can sound strange if you've never heard it before, but it comes directly from Jesus Himself. In the Gospel of John, chapter three, a man named Nicodemus, a religious leader, a respected teacher, came to Jesus at night to ask him questions. And Jesus said to him, Most assuredly I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. Now Nicodemus was confused. He said, How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter his mother's womb a second time? And Jesus explained that he was not talking about a physical birth. He was talking about a spiritual one. Being born again means that the Spirit of God has come to live inside of you and has given you a new kind of life, spiritual life that you did not have before. See, before you came to Christ, you were physically alive, but spiritually dead. Now I know that sounds dramatic, but the Bible is consistent about this. Ephesians chapter two verse one says that before we came to Christ, we are dead in our trespasses and sins. Not sick, not struggling, dead. And dead people cannot make themselves alive. They need someone to give them life from the outside. Well that is exactly what God did for you when you came to faith in Jesus Christ. He reached into your spiritual deadness and gave you life. The Holy Spirit of God, God Himself, took up resonance inside of you, and you were born spiritually for the very first time. This is why new believers so often describe the experience the same way across different cultures, different backgrounds, different life stories. They say things like something lifted. I feel clean for the first time. I feel like I am seeing things differently. I feel like I am actually alive. And that is not coincidence. And it is not emotional manipulation. That is the reality of spiritual birth. Something genuinely happened. Something real changed. You were born again. And here's what I want you to know and to hold on to from this first point. Because you have been born again, your standing before God has changed permanently. You are not on a spiritual probation, hoping that your good behavior will eventually be good enough. No, you are a child of God. In the same gospel, the gospel of John, chapter one, verse twelve, it says, But as many as received him, talking about Jesus, but as many as received him, to them he gave the right to become children of God to those who believe in his name. That right, that status as a child of God was given to you the moment you received Christ. It is not something you earn, it is something you receive. You were born again. And just as you did not earn your physical birth, you did not earn your spiritual birth. It was a gift, and it is permanent.

Forgiven Completely No Condemnation

The second truth I want you to understand is what happened to your sin when you came to Christ. And honestly, this is where a lot of new believers get confused. Because they carry into their new faith a weight of guilt and shame from their past that was never meant for theirs to carry. Let me say this as clearly as I possibly can. When you came to faith in Jesus Christ, your sin was forgiven. All of it. Every single thing you have ever done, thought, or said that was wrong before God, it was forgiven completely, permanently, not provisionally, not partially, completely. The Bible says in Colossians chapter two in the New Testament, Colossians chapter two, verse thirteen through fourteen, it says, And you, being dead in your trespasses, and the uncircumcision of your flesh, he has made alive together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses, having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us, and he has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. Nailed to the cross, that is the image that the apostle Paul uses. Every sin you have ever committed, the ones you remember and the ones you've forgotten, the ones you are ashamed of, and the ones you thought were not a big deal, the ones that kept you up at night, and the ones you barely even noticed. Every one of them was nailed to the cross where Jesus died. Well, here's how this works. Jesus Christ, the eternal Son of God, came into this world as a human being. He lived a perfect life, completely without sin. And then he went to the cross where he was crucified at the hands of evil men, and he took upon himself the full weight of God's judgment against sin. Not his own sin, he had none. He took the judgment for your sin and mine, and every person who would ever come to faith in him. The theological word for this is substitution. Jesus was your substitute. He stood in your place and received what you deserved, so that you could stand in his place and receive what he deserved. His righteousness was credited to your account. Your sin was charged to his account, and he paid it in full on the cross. And when Jesus said from the cross, it is finished, he was not saying that his life was over. He was declaring that the debt had been paid, the price had been met, there was nothing left to settle. It is finished. So here is what I want you to do with the guilt and the shame that you may still be carrying. I want you to understand that if you have genuinely come to faith in Jesus Christ, that guilt and that shame are no longer accurate. They are telling you a lie. They are telling you that the debt is still owed when Jesus already declared it paid. Now that does not mean that you will never feel the sting of past failures, past mistakes, even past intentional acts of sin. But it means that before God the record has been cleared. You are not guilty. You are forgiven. Romans chapter eight says there is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus. No condemnation, not reduced condemnation, not pending condemnation, no condemnation. That is your new status before God, not because of anything you have done, but because of everything Jesus has done. Your sin has been forgiven, all of it, and that forgiveness is not fragile, it does not evaporate when you mess up again. We will talk about what happens when believers sin in a future episode. But for today, plant this deep in your heart. You are forgiven completely, permanently, because of the cross, because of Jesus.

New Creation And Sanctification Process

and this is the part that I think takes the longest to fully understand and embrace. You are not the same person you were before you came to Christ. The old is gone. A new you has arrived. Go back to Second Corinthians chapter five verse seventeen. Look at it again. If you have your Bible app still open or your Bible pages open, look at Second Corinthians chapter five verse seventeen. If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. Old things have passed away. Behold, all things have become new. The Bible does not say you have improved. It does not say you have reformed. The Bible says you are a new creation. The word in the Greek language is a word that means new in kind, not just new in time. In other words, not a refurbished version of the old you. Something genuinely categorically new. Now, here again is where I want to be honest with you, because I think a lot of believers, a lot of new believers, and even believers who have been a Christian for a while, that's where a lot of us get confused and we get discouraged at this point. I mean, if you are a new creation, and if old things have passed away and all things have become new, why do you still feel the pull of the same old habits, the same old temptations, and the same old thought patterns? Why does the new creation not feel more new? Well, that's a real question, and it deserves a real answer. See, what changed instantly when you came to Christ was your identity, your standing, and your spiritual nature. The Holy Spirit came to live inside you. Your sin was forgiven. You became a child of God. Those things are completely and permanently true right now. What is still in process is your character, your habits, your thinking, and your behavior. The Bible calls this sanctification. In other words, that's the ongoing work of the Holy Spirit in your life to make the way you live match the new person you already are. And it is a process. I often say that. Sanctification is a process. And because it is a process, it takes time. A lifetime, in fact. Think of it this way. When a baby is born, that baby is fully human from the very first moment. There's nothing more human that baby needs to become. But there's a great deal of growing up still to do. The identity is complete, the development is ongoing. Well, that's where you are as a new believer. You are fully and completely a child of God, forgiven, reborn, and dwelled by the Holy Spirit. Your identity is settled. But you are at the beginning of a lifelong process of growing into the person that God has declared you to be. And here is the remarkable thing about that process. You are not doing it alone. The same Holy Spirit who gave you new life at the moment of your conversion is now living inside you, working in you, working on you, changing you from the inside out. One of my favorite verses in all the New Testament is Philippians chapter two, verse thirteen, which says, For it is God who works in you both to will and to do for his good pleasure. That's a great verse. I'm going to read it again. Philippians chapter two, verse thirteen. For it is God who works in you both to will and to do for his good pleasure. God is at work in you, not just outside of you watching to see if you perform well enough. No, no, inside of you doing the work. So when you feel the pull of old habits, do not conclude that nothing really changed. It did. When you find yourself struggling with the same temptations, do not decide that the new birth was not real. It was. When you were experiencing this tension, that is really the normal tension of a new creation living in an old world with an old nature that does not go down without a fight. But know this you are not the same. And the God who started this work in you will finish it. What a wonderful, wonderful truth.

Invitation To Trust Jesus

So before we wrap up today, I want to speak to anyone who might be listening who is not yet sure that what I am describing applies to them. Maybe you have been exploring the Christian faith for a while and you are still on the fence. Maybe someone shared this podcast with you, and you are curious, but not yet committed. I want to invite you right now to take the step that makes everything I've talked about today a reality in your own life. Now, here's the truth, as simply as I can say it. You and I were born into a broken relationship with God because of sin. And that's not just the things we do that are wrong, but it is a fundamental orientation of our hearts away from God and toward ourselves. And the consequence of that broken relationship is spiritual death and eternal separation from God in hell. But God, because he loves the people he made, did not leave us there. He sent his son, Jesus Christ, into the world to fix what we could not fix ourselves. Jesus lived the life we could not live, and he died the death we deserve to die. He rose again from the dead on the third day, defeating sin and death and the grave. And he offers right now to anyone who will receive him complete forgiveness and new life. The step is simple, not easy. It costs you everything, but simple. Turn from your sin and put your trust in Jesus Christ alone for your forgiveness and for your standing before God. Not your good works, not your religious performance, Jesus alone. If you've never done that, you can do it right now. You do not need a special prayer or a special place. You need a sincere heart. Tell God that you know you're a sinner, that you believe Jesus died for your sins and rose again, and that you are turning from your way and trusting in Him. That is the starting point.

So let me bring today's episode together. If you have come to faith in Jesus Christ, whether recently or in this very moment, here is what just happened to you. You were born again. The Spirit of God gave you new spiritual life that you did not have before. Your sin was forgiven completely and permanently because Jesus paid for it on the cross. And you were a new creation. The old you is gone. Something genuinely new has arrived, and the God who started this work in you will see it through to completion. That is the starting point, and it is a magnificent one. So in the episodes ahead, when we have this special feature, we're going to keep building on this foundation. We're going to talk about prayer, about the Bible, about why you need the church, about what to do when you struggle with sin, and much more. This is just beginning.
