What If Neglecting The Gospel Is The Real Rejection
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
“How shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation?” That question from Hebrews 2 is not poetry for the religious, it’s a warning that forces a decision. We dig into what the Bible actually says about Christian salvation and why the most dangerous response isn’t loud hostility but quiet neglect, delayed obedience, and spiritual drifting that feels normal until it’s too late.
We talk through the crucial distinction that Christ’s death is sufficient for all, yet effective only for those who believe. That one idea protects a wide gospel invitation and a clear call to personal faith, while also pushing back on universalism and hyper-Calvinism. Along the way we anchor everything in Scripture like John 3:36, Ephesians 2:8, Acts 16:31, and Acts 4:12, because labels won’t save anyone, but Jesus Christ will.
Then we slow down and stare at the cost of salvation: the cross is not an accident of history or a symbol for self-improvement, it is a blood-bought redemption. We also explore the certainty God provides through eyewitness testimony, signs and wonders, and the Holy Spirit’s ongoing witness that produces conviction, peace, courage, and sacrificial love. The result is both sobering and hopeful: the door of grace is open, but neutrality is not.
If this message strengthens you, share it with someone who’s drifting, subscribe for more biblical teaching, and leave a review so more people can find the gospel. What part of the warning in Hebrews 2 hits closest to home for you?

Opening And Core Salvation Texts
SPEAKER_02Today, Dr. Timothy Ban. As we look deeper into life, we do it. How he defeated death and what escaping work means for all who trusted it. Here's Dr. Timothy Band now with part two of salvation.
SPEAKER_01The Bible says John 3.36, Jesus said this. He who believes in the Son has everlasting life. And he who does not believe the Son shall not see life. Ephesians 2, verse 8. By grace you have been saved through faith. Acts 16, 31. We preached on this in the second sermon on this series. Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved. Let me just go a little further and just go ahead and make some of you even more upset with me. I'll be ready for your emails tomorrow. I promise you that. I will. I'll be ready.
Sufficient For All Effective Through Faith
SPEAKER_01Let me just go a little further and tell you why this matters. His death is sufficient for all, but effective for only those who believe. Let me tell you why this matters. Because that distinction helps protect two biblical truths. The first biblical truth is this God's gracious invitation is real. It's a bona fide offer. There's no phoniness in it, there's no fakeness in it, there's no bait and switch. His invitation is real. And it's wide. Anyone can be saved. Secondly, here's the other biblical truth. Salvation is only experienced through faith. No one is automatically saved without a personal response to Christ. Nobody. And also, this reality is death is sufficient for all, but effective only for those who believe. It also guards against two extremes. And one is this universalism. It guards against universalism. Yes, I've never heard of that in my life. I want to tell you what it is. It's the false teaching that everybody is saved and goes to heaven, regardless of belief in Jesus. That's a lie. And it also guards against another extreme. And that's hyper-Calvinism. The false teaching that the gospel shouldn't be offered to all people because Christ didn't die for all. You might ask me this morning, Pastor Tim, are you a Calvinist? No. You might ask me, Pastor Tim, are you an Armenian? No. I'm a Biblicist. I want to stand where the Bible stands no more and no less. And if I can't figure it all out, it doesn't matter to me. I don't have to cross your T or dot your I. I'm going to stand where the Bible stands no more and no less. You can like it or you can lump it. You can get on the board with Jesus. Listen, that's not going to be our fight here. It's not going to be in our fight here. I'm going to stand one more time. It's not going to be in our fight here. Have I been about as clear as I can be? We're going to stand on the gospel of Jesus Christ. God's business is his business. Our business is to make disciples and take the gospel. And I believe with full, clear conscience. I can look anybody in the eye and say, you need to come to Jesus, repent, and believe. Because Christ died for you. I don't have to hedge my bets. I don't have to stutter. I don't have to blush. Jesus died for you. Yeah. Hope that clears the air for some of you.
The Blood Bought Cost Of Salvation
SPEAKER_01Oh, we need to see and understand the cost of salvation this morning. The Apostle Paul said it well in Romans chapter 5, verse 8, God demonstrates his love, his own love toward us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. So the cross was no accident of history, it was the God-appointed means of redemption. Jesus was not a victim, he was a willing sacrifice. He came to die. He came to die. He himself said it. Luke 19, 10. The Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost. 1 Peter chapter 2, verse 24, the apostle said this, who himself, meaning Jesus, bore our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, having died two sins, might live for righteousness by whose stripes you are healed. This is why salvation isn't just a religious idea, it's a blood-bought fact. It was paid for at the highest price possible. By the grace of God might taste death for everyone. 1 Corinthians 6.20, for you were bought at a price. You were bought at a price. If you're a Christian in here this morning, you don't belong to you. The reality is you don't have any rights. You don't belong to you. You were bought at a price. Therefore, glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God's. And so this price, his blood, his death, really should influence how we see things. And it should influence how we live. We are not saved because we turn over a new leaf. You can turn over a new leaf, it'll be dirty too. No. We can be saved and we are saved because Jesus took our place on the cross. I want you to hear me well. Every lash on his back, every thorn that pressed into his brow, every drop of blood was the price of our salvation. And since that is true, how dare we treat this gift lightly? Because neglecting salvation isn't just ignoring a gift, it's trampling the cross. It's dismissing the most sacred event in history. It's yawning at grace and taking mercy for granted. I mean, imagine imagine someone who gives you an inheritance that cost them their life something they gave everything for. And you you toss it in a drawer, you forget about it. Or you just treat it as one of many other possessions that you have. That's what it means to treat salvation casually. That's what it means. It is free, yes, but it is infinitely costly. Have you become numb to the cross? When you sing about the blood of Jesus, does it still move your soul? When you hear the word grace, does your heart respond with gratitude? Or has it become routine? It's just routine. We're not saved by religion. We're saved by a Redeemer who bled and died in our place. And that should move us to repentance. It should move us to reverence. It should move us to worship, and it should give us great joy. But that's not all about this so great a salvation.
Eyewitness Proof Miracles And The Spirit
SPEAKER_01Thirdly, in this passage, we also see not only its source, not only its cost, but we see its certainty. It's certainty. The Bible says it's confirmed here by eyewitnesses and by the empowerment of the Spirit. How can we know that this salvation is real? How can we know that it's genuine? I mean, in a world, in a world of spiritual confusion and half-truths and all kinds of hollow philosophies, people constantly ask, How can I be sure? Well, the writer of Hebrews actually answers that question. Not with speculation, but with layers here of divine confirmation. Hebrews 2, 3-4 says, How shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation? Which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord and was confirmed to us by those who heard him. God also bearing witness both with signs and wonders, with various miracles and gifts of the Holy Spirit according to his own will. Our salvation is not based on myth, it's not based on imagination. It's historically rooted, it is divinely revealed and personally applied. Let me touch these quickly. Eyewitnesses. The author here reminds us that the message of salvation was, quote, confirmed to us by those who heard him. These are the apostles who walked with Jesus, who heard his teachings, who saw his miracles, who witnessed him being alive from the dead after he rose again. They weren't passing down legends. They weren't passing down spiritual metaphors. They're witnessing to what they had experienced. The apostle John wrote, and he said this in John, 1 John 1. He said, That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and I like this, and our hands have handled. We touched him. Concerning the word of life, capital W, the Lagos, that which we have seen and heard, we declare to you. And Peter, Peter declared. He said this, 2 Peter 1:16. He said, For we did not follow cunningly devised fables, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty. And so these men, these apostles, they suffered and they died not for a theory, not for a myth, not for a fairy tale, but for a risen Savior they had seen with their own eyes. Christianity doesn't ask you to make a blind leap of faith. It invites you to rest your soul on the solid foundation of eyewitness testimony. Truth verified by those who saw the risen Lord and Savior. He goes on to say it was validated by signs and wonders. That's what verse 4 says. It says that God Himself bore witness to the truth of the gospel with signs and wonders with miraculous, with various miracles. Throughout the Gospels, I'd encourage you to read the Gospels again. Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Read them. Read the book of Acts. Miracles served as divine validation. It was God's signature affirming the message of Jesus and the apostles. The blind received sight. The lame walked. The dead were raised. Demons fled, and lives were transformed. Those weren't just random displays of power. They were deliberate demonstrations that said, This message is from heaven. This is the Messiah. Even Nicodemus. Even Nicodemus, a Jewish Pharisee, recognized that. He said, Rabbi, we know that you are from a teacher from God, for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him. And so the miracles in the early church were never for show. They were about confirming the gospel and validating the messenger. And then we see, also empowered by the Holy Spirit. So finally, the Holy Spirit keeps confirming the gospel. Not just through past miracles, but also through the miracle of new life today. Every single one of those, the 15 or so that in the last couple of years that Todd and Christie have seen coming from a false religion, never heard the gospel, all 15 of those people were miracles that the Holy Spirit performed in their life. Hebrews 2, verse 4 says that God bears witness by gifts of the Holy Spirit according to his own will. So, in other words, the spirit remains active, convicting hearts, opening eyes, transforming lives, and equipping the church for works of ministry. The Apostle Paul himself writes in Romans 8:16, he says the Spirit, capital S, the Spirit himself bears witness with our Spirit that we are children of God. That's not just a theological concept, it is a living reality for every genuine believer.
SPEAKER_02You know, the world offers uncertainty at every turn, but God's word gives believers something solid

The Spirit’s Witness In Everyday Life
SPEAKER_01How do I know this salvation's real? Look, if you've ever been convicted of sin, if you've ever been, if you've ever sensed God's peace in suffering, in hardship, if you've ever been empowered to speak boldly for Jesus, that's not in keeping with your personality, some of you have the gift of Gab. You could talk to anybody, right? That's not what I'm talking about. I see that action up here. If you've ever been empowered to speak boldly for Jesus, if you've ever, if you've ever been empowered to love sacrificially, someone else who you would normally not like or even would consider an enemy. If any of that has ever been true in your life, you know what that is? That's the Spirit testifying in you. This salvation is real. This salvation is real. This salvation is real. Because that's the work of the Spirit in your life. And the gospel has been proven through history and miracles and scripture and the Spirit dwelling within. So don't hesitate. Don't waver. Don't look somewhere else. Don't look somewhere else. I'm telling you this morning, you can know the truth and you can live confidently in it.
No Escape If We Neglect Christ
SPEAKER_01You can. Hebrews chapter 2, verse 3 doesn't present a theory. It poses a question that it's right at the core. How shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation? That word escape is loaded. It's loaded heavy. Because it actually demands that we ask, escape what? Not just hardship, not just regret, but the righteous, eternal judgment of a holy God. Separated forever in hell. To neglect this salvation is to lose the only way to be saved. There is no second option. There's no alternative path. There's no back door into the kingdom of God. The Bible says in Acts chapter 4, verse 12, nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved. So this truth is sobering. There is no escape except through Jesus Christ. And the tragedy, I believe, as a pastor, from my perspective, the tragedy is that many won't miss heaven because they hated the gospel. But because they neglected it. They were too busy. They were distracted by the little things of life, by the worldly things of life. By things when it's all said and done will not matter. Not outright hostile, just indifferent. The warning in Hebrews is not just for scoffers and mockers, it's for people who have heard the truth. Who have maybe even agree with it, but have not responded with their lives. Because here's the danger. Neglect doesn't always look like rebellion. Sometimes it appears as a casual form of church attendance. Casual. Sometimes it appears as a theological interest, but without genuine faith. Without genuine followship of Jesus. It appears like delayed obedience or drifting, because not all rejection is loud. Some of it is quiet. Some of it is polite. But it's just as fatal. Verse 1. Therefore, we must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard. Lest we drift away. Lest we drift away. To drift is to cat gradually move away from the only anchor that can keep you firmly in place. And yet, this warning, though urgent, it's not cold. It's not just a threat. It's an invitation. God has spoken, Christ has died, the Spirit continues to draw hearts, and grace remains available today. Listen, the greatness of this salvation lies not only in its cost or in its origin, but also in what it achieves. I mean, it offers forgiveness where there was guilt. It offers life where there was death. It offers hope where there was despair. It offers peace where there was torment. It offers eternal joy where there was only judgment. And I think the Apostle Paul captures this very beautifully in Colossians 1, 13 through 14. It says, He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, in whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins. Praise His name. Praise His name. This is why it's such a great salvation. Because it's not just a second chance, it's a new life bought by Christ and freely given to everyone who believes. So how can we escape if we ignore it? Well, the answer is clear we won't. You won't. But the door of grace is still open.
Stop Drifting And Respond Today
SPEAKER_01And so the question becomes what will you do with this salvation? Because if you've never trusted Christ as your Savior, I would say to you this morning, don't wait. Trust Him today. Believe now. Now. Right now. Right where you sit. Turn away from sin and believe the gospel. Because the same Jesus who tasted death for you now offers you eternal life. And so ask him to have mercy on you and to forgive you and to save you. Now. But I know I need to ask this question because this is the majority of who I'm talking to probably this morning. If you're already saved, let this truth that we've looked at this morning shake the dust off your heart. I mean, let it renew your awe. Let it reignite your joy. Let it recommit your soul. We never, I don't know why this happens. We never move on from the gospel. We only move deeper into it. And yet, after everything we've seen regarding its divine source and its infinite cost and its rock solid certainty, Hebrews 2 leaves no room this morning for us to say neutral. You can't leave this place this morning neutral. You can't be Switzerland today, neutral. Not to choose is to choose.
unknownIt depends.
SPEAKER_01Demands that we respond. How shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation? This salvation isn't something that you admire from a distance. It isn't a theological concept to study and look at and set aside. It's God's very invitation to receive mercy, to receive eternal life, and to be made new. So the question really this morning no longer is, what is salvation, like we've been talking about for the last several weeks? The question, the real question is, what will you do with it? What will you do with it? Will you delay? Or will you draw near? Will you drift? Will you devote yourself entirely to Christ? Will you walk away unmoved? Or will you bow your heart and wonder? So if you've never trusted in Jesus Christ, I'm talking truly and personally, then this is your moment. It's not just information to consider, it's essential. Salvation isn't about self-improvement. It's not about cleaning up your act or becoming more religious. It's about turning away from sin, trusting in Christ's finished work on the cross, and yielding your life to him. Acts 16, 31. Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved. Romans 10, 9. That if you will confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised him from the dead, you will be saved. I gotta pass this one more time. If you've already received this great salvation, the question changes. The question changes. Here it is. Are you truly living like you have it? Are you truly living like you have it? Oh, we might not deny Christ with our words, but how often do we neglect him through our priorities? We may affirm the gospel on Sunday. I mean, we might say, Amen, amen, preacher. Praise the Lord. Hallelujah. Yeah, I agree 100%. Right on, rock on, keep going. We might affirm the gospel on Sunday, but how often do we drift right into self-reliance on Monday?
SPEAKER_02Sunday evening.
SPEAKER_01Sunday evening. Brother, I'm praying for revival to come in your life. Hebrews 2 isn't just a warning to unbelievers. It's a wake-up call for professing Christians. We must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard lest we drift away. Let the greatness of your salvation reignite your affections.
SPEAKER_02Let the cross humble your pride. Thanks
